Real Madrid youngsters romp to promotion with Mirandés

Congratulations to both Real Madrid Castilla & CD Mirandés on their ascent to La Segunda. Promotion represents a return to the second tier of Spanish football for Real Madrid’s youngsters after an absence of five seasons, while Mirandés cap a truly memorable season by rising to the second division for the first time in the club’s history.

Castilla’s promotion was all but confirmed following their 0-3 victory away to Cádiz in the first leg of the tie. However Los Merengues did not let up and raced into a 3-0 lead within the first hour with goals from Jesé, Mosquera & Joselu. David de Coz pulled a goal back for Cádiz on 74 minutes, before Mosquera with a second goal & Alvaro sealed an emphatic 5-1 victory, 8-1 on aggregate. As Castilla head for La Segunda, Cádiz will get a chance to redeem themselves in the next phase of the play-offs.

A packed Estadi Balear witnessed an altogether tighter affair as Atlético Baleares hosted CD Mirandés early on Sunday morning. With the visitors from the mainland holding a 1 goal lead from the first leg, it was Atlético who had to play on the offensive. However, compact defending from Mirandés limited the islanders to few real chances. In the second half, Atlético’s pressing was rewarded when Angulo drilled home from close range in the 56^th minute.

With the tie heading for extra time, Mirandés earned a penalty in the 84^th minute following Mantovani’s clumsy tackle on Martin. The Atlético centre back was shown a second yellow card, and the remaining 10 men watched on as Pablo coolly slotted home the penalty. Mirandés sealed victory with two minutes to go when David Sanchéz headed into his own net when under pressure following a through ball. Mirandés will now play Castilla to determine the champion of Segunda B, whilst Atlético Baleares head to the next stage of the play-offs.

There were six other second leg ties featuring clubs that had finished second, third & fourth in their respective leagues. In the first of these ties, Eibar and Lugo played out a dour 0-0 draw at the Estadio Ipurua on Saturday night. Eibar was particularly disappointing, creating little and lost the tie 0-1 thanks to Belencoso’s goal for Lugo in the first leg. Lugo progress whilst Eibar are condemned to another season in Segunda B.

Saturday’s second fixture saw Albacete travel to Orihuela. The first leg had ended in a 1-1 tie, but it was the visitors who made the early running, creating a number of early chances. The pressure eventually paid off in the 28^th minute when Zurdo’s cross shot was parried by Orihuela keeper Alba into the path of his own midfielder Fleky, who inadvertently bundled the ball into his own net. Orihuela created little throughout the game and it was Albacete who had a number of chances to close out the tie, but failed to convert. The game ended 0-1, with Albacete advancing 2-1 on aggregate.

After a last-minute equaliser in the first leg in Badalona, Tenerife made much easier work of the second leg, winning by 3 goals to one. A stunning first half strike from Victor Bravo and header on 48 minutes from Aridane gave Tenerife a comfortable 2 goal lead. The Catalan’s put the tie back on the boil with a close range strike from Ceballos on the hour, but the islanders’ nerves were settled when Chetu made it 3-1 with 10 minutes to go and send Tenerife through to the next stage.

There was plenty of drama in La Linea, where Basque outsiders Amorebieta took an early lead against RB Linense with a goal from Muñozguren on 3 minutes. Worse was to follow for the home team on 29 minutes when defender Carlos Guerro was given a straight red card following an off the ball incident. Linense hauled themselves back into the tie when Ocaña scored on 40 minutes. The tie was settled on 70 minutes when Ocaña got his second of the game when he slotted home from the penalty spot.

Ponferradina trailed Real Jaén 1-2 from the first leg and it was the Andalucíans who squandered the game’s first couple of chances. Ponferradina made them pay for their wastefulness when Mateo scored with a towering header on 23 minutes. The home side increased their lead in the 53^rd minute Yuri tapped home a second and decisive goal.

Lucena and Huracán Valencia played out a second sucessive 0-0 draw, so the tie went to a shoot-out. Misses from Huracán’s Powel and Amarilla meant that Lucena left back Germán had a kick to win the tie, and he duly obliged with a classy finish into the top right hand corner.

So Lucena join Ponferradina, RB Linense, CD Tenerife, CD Lugo, Albacete Balompié, Atlético Baleares and Cádiz in the last eight of the Segunda B play-offs. The draw will be made later on Monday 28^th May at around 16.30 CET.
